about

“My wife Carrie and I are NFL fans, and I was playing parts of this song when my wife showed me a video where Rob Gronkowski (NFL player) was being interviewed. He was asked a fairly long question about why the media was so interested in his private life, and he just replied “Cuz I’m a baller”, which we found pretty funny and it stuck as the working title.

“Initially the EP title was going to be “Unicorns/Show Ponies”, and that also came about from an NFL quote. Ageing quarterback Tom Brady had been hung out to dry by the media – they were saying he was past his prime and there were all these young guns waiting to take his place. Then when Brady won a game for his team in the final seconds a radio commentator briefly lost his mind and started shouting many random but generally supportive phrases for Brady, one of which was “Unicorns, show ponies, where’s the beef?”. The Unicorn in this statement is Tom Brady and the show ponies are the young pretenders, I have no idea where the beef is or why that’s important! And for me being in a band, and sometimes life in general, is reflected by this analogy – sometimes you feel like the unicorn, sometimes you feel like the show pony (and occasionally looking for beef). The final EP title encapsulates my overall feelings on these songs and this stage of my life, hence the reason for the change, but we still wanted to use the phrase somewhere, and this song was perfect for it.”

lyrics

The sky records explosions
Like superimpositions
Lighting up and flaring out in the dark
Something hurts your eyes
Suffocate in sulphuric air
We let oceans wave
While isolating lakes
In semi-wakeful states
Slip and oscillate
We’re weightless and finite
Reinvent and synthesise
Slip and oscillate
Animate in air and space
Be more awake, aware
Catch and imaginate
Demarcate
Serrating us, hollering:
“Slip and oscillate”
We let oceans wait
While isolating lakes
In semi-wakeful states
When you wonder what to call your own
It’s any wonder this city is not your home
